These business success stories encourage other companies to scale their operations. Global research shows that for 55% of retailers, market expansion is the main priority for 2026. Moreover, 15% indicate that international expansion will be the most important driver of revenue growth for retail chains [1]. How should companies prepare for this process from a technological perspective? Which aspects of a sales system require particular attention?

Table of Contents

Preparing for international expansion in retail

Sales systems and diverse fiscal regulations

Key fiscal differences include:

Customer expectations for local payment methods

The Impact of Cultural Factors on Sales Systems

Preparing for international expansion in retail

The starting point for entering a foreign market is developing a business strategy. This must be preceded by an analysis of the target market’s characteristics, as well as the company’s internal situation, including financial, human, and time resources necessary to carry out the process.

At this stage, retailers should also identify legal challenges related to operating in another country. Formal matters, such as setting up a business, are usually not a major obstacle especially when supported by a local law firm. However, regulations also affect other aspects of retail operations, including technology. Therefore, once the legal framework for doing business abroad has been established, it is advisable to consult a specialist who can help select appropriate solutions and develop a plan to adapt existing sales systems to the regulations of the target country.

Sales systems and diverse fiscal regulations

The European Union aims to harmonise tax law, making international expansion generally easier within the EU than outside it. However, fiscal regulations still differ significantly, and failing to adapt a POS system accordingly can effectively delay entry into a foreign market. For this reason, retailers should carefully review both EU and local requirements and verify whether their IT solutions comply with them.

Key fiscal differences include:

the obligation to print receipts containing information not required in Poland,

the need to use country-certified software,

the requirement to implement solutions that prevent sales data manipulation and tax fraud (e.g. the Technical Security Element in Germany),

the obligation to electronically record sales and transmit data directly to relevant authorities (such as Agenzia delle Entrate in Italy).

The speed, ease, and cost of adapting a sales system to different fiscal regulations depend largely on the software architecture. This can be particularly challenging in monolithic systems, where all functions are tightly interconnected. Such a structure makes it difficult to scale individual components (e.g. those responsible for fiscal processes), and even minor changes often require rebuilding the entire system.

In contrast, a microservices architecture operates differently. Individual business functions are handled by separate modules that can be developed independently. This is how the iXpos system works. Compliance is managed by dedicated fiscal modules tailored to the standards and requirements of each country. As a result, international expansion does not require a complete system overhaul.

Customer expectations for local payment methods

Technology used by retail chains must also meet the expectations of consumers in different countries, particularly regarding cashless payments. Research shows that as many as 52% of consumers will abandon a purchase if their preferred payment method is not available [2]. From a technological perspective, this makes integration with local payment service providers essential. This process is significantly easier in a microservices architecture than in a monolithic system.

The iXpos sales platform enables comprehensive system integration. Thanks to its API (application programming interface) and RabbitMQ (an open-source message broker), it supports two-way communication not only with payment providers, but also with e-commerce platforms and ERP and WMS systems.

The Impact of Cultural Factors on Sales Systems

Culture influences nearly every aspect of operating in a foreign market. An international expansion strategy in retail should account for consumer habits, marketing communication styles, and expectations regarding product offerings and promotions. Sales systems should also reflect cultural differences. Particular attention should be paid to:

POS interface translation – the best approach is to work with a native speaker familiar with retail-specific technological terminology. Automated translations are strongly discouraged,

interface design – visual elements and layout should align with cultural expectations,

presentation of information – formats for dates, times, and currencies vary between countries.

Cultural factors, legal regulations, and consumer expectations are the key areas that must be addressed when adapting a POS system for international expansion. Overlooking any of them may delay market entry and generate additional costs. Scaling a business and developing a sales platform in line with local market requirements is much easier with a microservices architecture. But what about retailers who adopted monolithic systems years ago? In such cases, a gradual transformation is recommended—modernising individual components step by step.

Sources:

[1] Deloitte, 2026 Retail Industry Global Outlook
[2] Adyen, Retail Report 2025

International expansion in the retail industry.
